Bump key how-to

Is it really this easy?

Comments:
Was that a rhetorical question in the title?

Yea, it's really that easy. Of course, that guy was doing it on a nice clean lock and he'd done it before on the lock so he knew exactly how much pressure, etc to use, but it's not difficult.

Of course, it's not difficult to pick one of those kinds of locks using standard lock-picks, or with a pick-gun.

Even with a pick gun, you have to have very good timing to pull off a successful opening (from what I have read - I don't have a pick gun of my own). Picking manually is time-consuming and takes a lot of learned skill - it's not just a series of simple actions which anyone can perform, it takes practice. Using a bump key in this new "minimum movement" method, however, is very simple - if the key is cut correctly (which is easily done with a keycutting machine), anyone, even the 11-year-old at Defcon 14 (shown in the Engadget post), can do it. It makes it a lot simpler to open complex locks, and that's why lockpicking 'purists' shun it; it's a 'cheat'.

A pick-gun is essentially the same thing; works on the same pricipal anyway. And it doesn't require that you already have a key that fits the lock.

I agree that this method is a simple "anyone can do it" method of opening these locks. I was just trying to say that these types of locks wern't secure even before bumping became popular.

This whole ordeal is a lot like a couple years ago when everyone was talking about how you can open cylindrical locks (like those common on bike and laptop locks) with a Bic pen. A few scoundrels try it, the media goes fear-mongering, and then it all blows over.

Bump keys are easy to use by almost anybody aslong as you have the right type of key and lets be honest keys aren't the most expensive thing on the planet.
I'm 16 and have manufactured and tested my own bump key on my house door and it worked which scared me a little. Me and my friend then tested it on his house door and it worked on that aswell.
I dont mean to sound funny but im quite stupid and if i can do it anybody can.
