A New Theory of Climate Change

It has been really interesting reading the back-and-forthing on this topic:The thing that is most interesting about science is that we learn more every day...

Comments:
I've read Marshall's information on God and religion. I don't want to copy Rush Limbaugh's talking points but it seems like global warming (which I believe is taking place and we need to do something about where possible) is a lot more like a religion to a lot of folks, and less like the rational building of consensus over time. Note the comments section of those articles. Some people come out rather harshly against alternative theories.

Global Warming = Global Socialist Conpiracy

http://infowars.net/articles/february2007/080207Socialism.htm

"Global warming is the ideal scare campaign for those who are doing all they can to secure strict control over society, business, and the minutest details of individual life." As Horner explains, "if global warming really were as bad as the Leftist doomsayers insist it is, then no policy imaginable could 'solve' it … no matter how much we sacrifice there would still be more to do. That makes global warming the bottomless well of excuses for the relentless growth of Big Government."

Everybody knows it was the technological advances and strife between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons that caused the end (melt) of the last Ice Age -- don't they? -- blzbob

Actualy, globabl warming is caused by internet porn. That's not just the truth, it's the double supertruth.

What Does SOHO say about it?

From what I have read, solar out is cyclical. When it was going up, it matched warming trends. Now it is heading back down, but temperature is still heading up. The solar variable has been exploded.

Math can be an interesting little toy when dealing with global warming claims. Everybody seems to focus on automobiles, the evil carbon spilling cars, trucks and SUV's, and espcially in the USA, since there are so many.

However, the world is larger than we think. The atmosphere weighs ~5,000,000,000,000,000 metric *tons*. .038% of that is carbon dioxide. If you were to drive every single registered car, truck, van, and SUV in the United States 50,000 miles each year, it would take 378 years for the amount of CO2 to rise to .03901%

So, something else is obviously at work. It's also good to know, that the global mean temperature has risen .8 degrees C in the past 150 years.

Hmmm, I said this two years ago.

In this comment box.

I think the evidence for manmade global climate change is far less compelling than Al Gore asserts, and far more compelling than Rush Limbaugh asserts. The only people telling the truth about the issue are those who say, "I don't know." The scientific jury is out...

The ethical issue is different. I'd frame it like this: at what point does the probability of manmade global climate change warrant concerted action? 10% likelihood? 50%? 90%? The IPCC claims a 90% probability...I suspect it's somewhat lower than that, but has surpassed 50%.

It's too bad the discourse on global climate change is dominated by the likes of Limbaugh and Gore (sanctimonious, self-aggrandizing, politically-calculating sophists) rather than scientists and ethicists.

Awesome resource. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.I would like to read you another informative post very soon.
